Are Cockapoos Prone To Diarrhea?

The Cockapoo is among the most popular cross-breeds because of its looks and personality.

But there is the risk that they are likely to develop some gastrointestinal problems at some point in their lives.

Even if your Cockapoo is healthy, it can sometimes suffer the odd bout of diarrhea. Generally, in most cases, such is short-lived, and you don´t need to do anything to deal with it.

But if this situation continues for any length of time, then it could be a sign of a more severe problem.

So What May Cause Your Cockapoo To Have Diarrhea?

Contents and Quick Navigation

Several reasons your pup may suddenly develop a case of diarrhea.

A Change In Diet

If you decide to replace their current food with a new brand or flavour, this can cause them to suffer from diarrhea.

This is especially the case if you feed them a diet high in fiber and fat.

If they eat too much of these, you may find that their digestive system doesn´t have the capability to handle them.

Your Dog Is Stressed

Just like us, and your pup can suffer from anxiety and stress, leading to health issues.

If your Cockapoo is stressed, it can cause an imbalance in the microbes in its stomach. If left untreated, eventually, over time, it can cause the good bacteria to be replaced by harmful bacteria.

In turn, leading to your pup suffering from an upset stomach that leads to them suffering from diarrhea.

Down To The Breed

As the owner of a Cockapoo or any hybrid dog, you should be aware that they will have specific needs regarding their diet related to their parents.

Often, such dogs may find it difficult to process certain nutrients or vitamins. So it is essential to read up on each parent breed to identify those that may cause stomach problems for your pet.

This way, you can make sure that you are feeding them the right kind of food that is suitable for both breeds.

What To Do If Your Cockapoo Suffers From Diarrhea

However if your pup does suffer a bout of diarrhea, there are a couple of things you can do to help treat it.

You may find that not feeding your puppy for between 12 and 24 hours whilst providing them with small amounts of water will help to rectify the problem.

You can also consider feeding them some plain rice that you´ve cooked up for them.

Other foods you may also want to feed your dog when they have an upset stomach include pumpkin, natural greek yoghurt, and eggs.

Cook these up with herbs such as fennel to help to settle their stomach.

You could also consider using over-the-counter medications that we would use for treating an upset stomach.

However, before you do, you must speak to your vet. This is even more important should your Cockapoo suffer from diarrhea for longer than a few days.
