Cockapoo vs Maltipoo

Maltipoo. Cockapoo. Over the years, there are other Poos more popular, and loveable than Winnie himself, and we can’t get enough of them. Designer breeds are all the rage, and you can get everything from a Cheek (a Chihuahua crossed with a Pekingese), and a Puggle (a Pug crossed with a Beagle), to a Frug (a French Bulldog and a Pug), or a Bernedoodle (a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle). And let’s not forget the Chiweenie, a Chihuahua crossed with a Dachshund.

While these hybrids are undeniably cute, if not a little weird, the Cockapoo and Maltipoo are still two of the most popular choices. Both dogs combine the characteristics of a Cocker Spaniel and Maltese respectively, with a poodle or a toy poodle. And both breeds are intelligent, lovable and perfect additions to your family.

Let’s take a closer look at the Cockapoo vs Maltipoo debate.

Characteristics of a Cockapoo and a Maltipoo

As dog lovers, it’s hard for us to say which of the two we would choose. After all, they’re both super-cute and super-smart, with only a few minor differences. Let’s take a quick look at the Cockapoo.

What is a Cockapoo?

A Cockapoo is a combination of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. They are also called a Spoodle, or a Cockerpoodle, but whatever you do, don’t call them stupid. Cockapoos are particularly smart, as well as loyal and affectionate. They have playful personalities and love to learn.

What is a Maltipoo?

A Maltipoo is a cross between a Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. Maltipoo characteristics are happy-go-lucky dogs, eager to please, affectionate and loyal. Because of their nature, they are regularly used as therapy dogs. Sometimes people call this cross breed a maltease cockapoo.

What is the Difference Between a Cockapoo and a Maltipoo

To be honest, there aren’t major differences between the two, except maybe for their size. As far as shedding, grooming, exercise and personality go, they’re “mutt of a muttness”.

Shedding and grooming

A Cockapoo, like a Maltipoo, doesn’t shed a lot and are great pets for people who may suffer from allergies. They’re fairly low maintenance in that they only need to be brushed once a week, to prevent their coats from becoming knotted or matted.

Cockapoos are extremely loving, very smart and alert, as are Maltipoos. Both breeds love being family pets, and get on with other dogs, cats, and children. Cockapoos are probably better in smaller spaces and with older people because they’re not as energetic.

Maltipoos are always on high alert and are very protective of their families. They love being loved, and when they’re not running around, you’ll find them curled up on their human’s lap. Do Maltipoos bark a lot? Probably a bit more than the Cockapoo, yes.

Cockapoos are usually between 10 to 18 pounds, while a large Maltipoo will be between 8 to 12 pounds. With this in mind, Cockapoos are better suited to families with smaller children, while Maltipoos need to be handled with care.

If you’re trying to decide between the two, we’d say you won’t go wrong with either. It’s almost like asking a mum-to-be whether she wants a boy or a girl. While there are pros and cons to both, she would be happy with either, as long as they are healthy.
